This is a short book of critical essays on White Noise, which is also edited by Lentricchia, published by Cambridge University Press in 1991 (115 pages). My agenda at least—and I speak here only for myself—is precisely what I have expressed it to be—namely, a call to re-examine the claims of the majority text in the light of increasingly perceived deficiencies of the theory that underlies today’s editions. In truth, the presuppositions of this school were contrary to historical fact, as we have illustrated above; the research of this school was colored by the philosophical principle of rationalism; and its investigation was guided by the false idea that the narratives of Genesis were the product of sheer religious imagination, proceeding from a subrational instinct prevailing in pre-modern man and copied essentially from the religious fantasies of the surrounding pagan cultures.

It is difficult to find a short story by title in the catalog because they are usually published in collections and anthologies, but you can also try using quotes around the title of the story. Opponents criticize narrative critics for using modern techniques on ancient literature (7) without regard of the historical nature of the ancient texts, or how a first-century reader might have understood the text. “Narrative criticism imposes modern literary techniques to ancient literature,” which creates confusion between non-biblical and biblical literature. (8) Ben Witherington III asserts, “Mark is not a work of ancient or modern fiction, and this means that some things which apply especially to modern fiction do not apply to Mark.” (9) Malbon agrees, “stories may be historical, fictional, or historical fiction – although this categorization is anachronistic when applied to first-century texts.” (10) Thus, narrative critics must be cognizant of narrative criticism’s tendency to use modern literary techniques, (11) which might not apply to a text written in the first-century. (12) The third major argument against narrative criticism is that Mark’s Gospel is a redacted document, and therefore, cannot be read as unified narrative.

Form-critics like Hermann Gunkel and Rudolf Bultmann had elaborate techniques of investigation and marked ability to express their outrageous theories in a manner that appears plausible and well organized, with the result that many secular historians accept the validity of their conclusions, also because these secular historians share the same rationalistic presuppositions. Alongside the development of studies in Arabic grammar, Arabic orthography also developed for linguistic and literary material, and although the cUthmânic rasm was one of the sources of ordinary orthography the latter began to differ from the cUthmânic rasm of the Qur'an.

But we should be clear that it is often historic Christian affirmation that Scripture speaks truly about faith and history that is the chief object of critical rejection. (Sometimes it is poor evangelical scholarship, and that needs to be admitted and remedied.) The problem is not primarily some unyielding and embittered “evangelical faith” that arose in the last few generations and that we should now sweeten by intermingling a few (or many) spoonsful of historical-critical conclusions (like no Adam).
