S. 4 Due to the complexity, depth, density, and breadth of the endeavor, the first volume of An American Health Dilemma spans the period from antiquity to 1900. Abuse, exploitation, and ethical turpitude characterizing many aspects of this historical journey have poisoned roots stretching back into the ancient depths of Western medicine and science. This inquiry suggests that White America’s strongest, almost anomic, driving forces regarding Black health have been indifference and neglect—except when direct self-interests were served.
The reader should not be encumbered by having to retrogress or look up items to comprehend or move forward in the text. It is also necessary to include certain lists and tables, often containing technical data. These items are clearly labeled with necessary explanations such that any audience could master the material. Footnotes and material at the base of the table are designed with this in mind. In the interests of convention, convenience, and logic, this book is organized into chapters. Each chapter after the background focuses on a particular period in African American health history and for pedagogic reasons is written as an autonomous unit.
A comprehensive Bibliography and an Index appear at the end of the book. Like any study entering uncharted territory, some limitations must be acknowledged. A major limitation is one that has bedeviled African American scholarship since this country was founded. That is one of limited resources. Another limitation common in the American system is a paucity of scholarly sources and references about Black health in either the historical or contemporary literature. The historically perceived lack of importance attached to the subject is reflected by the scant literature devoted to it.
