The US Army tried to develop nonlethal biological agents that could be used as safe simulants for a real bioweapons attack on the US population. The most commonly used simulants were serratia marcescens and bacillus subtilis (bacillus globii) (Cole, 1988, 167). These two microorganisms were sprayed as aerosols in combination fluorescent particles from ships on six separate tests, lasting 30 minutes each, in the San Francisco Bay in a simulated biowarfare attack during 20th and 27th September 1950 (Cole, 1988: 79).
