Lockwood’s classmate in law school was another well-known Arizona politician, Nellie Trent Bush.

Between 1863 and 1910, women never represented more than 5% of the population. Only 6% of the Chinese population of Los Angeles in 1910 was female. Exclusion had been a very effective mechanism at keeping Chinese women out of the country. Japanese women were completely different demographically. The first Japanese woman, named Okei, arrived in 1869 as part of the Wakamoto Tea and Silk Farm Colony in California.
