Finally, during the last two decades of the prison’s existence, the population profile included younger and younger inmates, many convicted of serious violent crimes. The number of inmates serving long sentences and life sentences for murder continued to grow. I worked at the Prison for Women during the seventies and eighties. My memory bank is filled with the encounters with numerous inmates and staff who influenced my world. Staff at times have a difficult job to do. There is considerable stress that can affect their performance.
Shortly after we entered the room, the warden was called away to resolve a matter. I introduced myself and informed Mary Ann I worked in corrections. I sat down on the other side of the table. Mary Ann was a twenty-three-year-old white American woman sentenced for kidnapping a baby from a large hospital in the Vancouver area. Mary Ann had sandy-coloured hair and beautiful blue eyes. She was a plain Jane; no makeup, no perfume, and wore simple prison clothes. She was about five feet, seven inches tall.
Inmates in the disciplinary area of segregation were all dressed in prison pyjamas. Each cell contained a toilet, sink, and metal bunk bed with blanket and sheets. The cell bars were all painted black to better assist correctional officers in viewing inmates inside their cells. Inmates were allowed showers or baths two to three times per week. Sheets of toilet paper were handed out by the staff as they were needed. This method helped prevent upset inmates from blocking their toilets with rolls of toilet paper or starting fires.
