The terminal portions of superior cerebral veins may also cause thinning of the overlying vault where they gain a similar relationship to the dura before entering the superior sagittal sinus, and some of these impressions are widened where they correspond to lacunae laterales. A vein running upwards near the coronal suture in company with the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery often achieves the size and nature of a dural sinus, and has been called the spheno-parietal or spheno-bregmatic sinus.

More rarely still, an arteriovenous malformation may produce a similar radiological appearance when it affects the whole thickness of the scalp. It will usually be found in arteriovenous malformations that the grooves for hypertrophied vessels are widespread, showing little tendency to come to one focal point. This and the absence of hyperostosis or erosion help to distinguish the appearance from that of the commoner cause of hypertrophied meningeal arteries — meningioma. Large arteriovenous malformations may enlarge the internal carotid or vertebral arteries to a degree great enough to cause recognizable expansion of the bony channels through which they run.

The relief of raised intracranial pressure, (a) Frontal cystic glioma. A frontal lobectomy was performed. The floor of the sella and the dorsum have lost their cortex. There is also erosion which has thinned the dorsum; but it is not displaced, (b) The same patient 3 years later. In the interval she had been free of clinical evidence of raised intracranial pressure until shortly before this radiological examination. An unusual amount of re-ossification has occurred.
