THE WELFARE EFFECTS OF ECONOMIC INTEGRATION In analysing the welfare effects of economic integration, a good starting point is to consider the costs of segmenting national markets by the imposition of various barriers to trade. These barriers can be conveniently represented by a tariff, which increases the market price of imported goods and therefore serves to completely or partially exclude them from the home market.
