The work can also be considered in relation to specific models, from art, science, or literature, that the student knows or tries to use, or in relation to the issue the student is dealing with, or the thought or feeling he is attempting to communicate. Last, the work can be considered in relation to the work of other students, to what they attempted, and can be of use to the student in question. Evaluation should look ahead to future work as well as deal with the quality of any particular effort.

Only when a teacher emerges as another person in the classroom can a free environment based upon respect and trust evolve. Moreover, if the teacher remains a silent, abused witness to student authoritarianism, a tune will come when the teacher has had enough and will take back the freedom he offered the students. A free way of existing is not necessarily an easy way of existing. Autonomy, the ability to make one’s own decisions, and self-direction, the ability to act pa one’s decisions, can be quite painful to people who have-grown up in an authoritarian system.

Principals who often sympathize with the anger of a young teacher towards the brutalization of students will advise that the teacher wait until the student leaves and then approach the offending teacher rationally. This is nonsense; it is also collusion. I remember a teacher in one of the schools that I taught in. She kicked and smacked and insulted the children and I wanted to do the same to her or at least remove her from the school. She had job tenure, and I had none. I remained silent for a while and my pupils confronted my passive attitude: Why do you let her do it?
