Gunner's Mate Adolph Nilsson on board Olympia, thought to have fired the first shot in the battle of Manila Bay, joined the US Navy in Copenhagen in August 1885, at the age of 2 1 . After serving 14 years with the Navy, he was honorably discharged in 1899, in New York, to become an American citizen. By 1899, after a series of reforms and improvements to a sailor's life, 75 percent of US sailors were US citizens. Additionally, during the period from 1 8 8 0 - 9 1 , the martial music of John Philip Sousa and the Marine Corps Band played a significant part in the promotion of the new navy to the US public and the recruitment of young American men.
