A real try and imagine another way, Gilles Deleuze's paintings demanding situations, provokes and frustrates. unusually useful in addition to leading edge, it really is now being visible as a 'must read' for college students and students around the humanities and social sciences. Claire Colebrook's knowing Deleuze bargains a complete and intensely available creation to his paintings. hink another way. it really is equipped at the thought of an immanent ethics: how will we have a political and moral concept with no a few exterior beginning akin to the topic or morality? He argues that the single means we will be able to do that is with a conception of the digital, and he sees all lifestyles (not simply cyberculture) as digital. Deleuze is going extra than Foucault or Derrida in wondering the limits of the topic and data. For Deleuze notion extends past the human, to animals, machines and microorganisms.

Even the word ‘being’ is a concept, and we could not think what ‘is’ without such a concept. Concepts allow the very thought of being, and concepts operate through differentiation. So, far from difference being secondary, indifferent or the mere external relation between beings, difference is what enables being. Difference, Hegel insisted, was absolute; any time we try to think of what lies outside the differentiating power of concepts, we can only do so through concepts, in relation to concepts (or as something being different from our concepts).

For the structuralists it is not thought that differentiates the world, it is a system of language. Before we can think or conceptualise there must be a system of differentiated marks—such as the letters of a language—which allow difference to be organised. Thought is not autonomous but has to be located within a system of sounds, marks or ‘signifiers’ in order for there to be ordered concepts or meanings. Structuralists thus argued that meaning could only be explained by structures or systems of difference, such as languages.

We no longer believe in timeless values or essences. We value Shakespeare because of the beliefs of our culture and institutions, but we can easily imagine societies where Hamlet either makes no sense or does not seem particularly worthy. It seems futile to imagine some ‘essence’ of art; art is just what universities or critics canonise or consecrate. It seems equally futile to imagine any other sorts of essences. We live our world through meanings and representations. What we understand by the words ‘femininity’ or ‘good’ would be quite different in another epoch or culture.
