This ebook was once built from the yankee Chemical Society (ACS) Presidential Symposium on "Vision 2025: find out how to achieve the worldwide Chemistry Enterprise", held on the 245th nationwide assembly of the ACS in New Orleans in April 2013. The symposium audio system (and authors of the booklet chapters) have been most sensible leaders of the chemistry company, together with Presidents of overseas chemical societies, company executives, educational proposal leaders, federal technology business enterprise administrators, and winning marketers. the aim was once to supply their collective views at the international chemistry company and proportion their stories and concepts so that it will gain chemistry execs and scholars sooner or later. many of the issues lined incorporated present actions of foreign chemical societies, winning worldwide collaborative efforts, rules on additional cooperative and academic possibilities, and examples of contemporary profitable study or entrepreneurial efforts. a complete of twenty-two chapters are integrated during this ebook with contributions from just about all symposium audio system. For comfort, they're divided into 3 sections: 1) views from U.S. leaders, 2) views from overseas leaders, and three) winning international start-ups, collaborations, and in a foreign country assignments.

It is interesting to note that in our experience, not only is chemical research important for solving world problems, it is a wonderful vehicle for inspiring young people. It might seem as though college freshman and younger students are too inexperienced to understand or appreciate university research, but we have found that high-powered science is particularly appealing to these students. An introductory class on chemical research, in which professors describe their work and give tours of their labs, has been a wild success at Caltech and has attracted many students to enroll as chemistry majors.

We have developed a robust program of public outreach that focuses predominantly on engaging youth from ages 8 to 18. The kids share our vision for the importance of discovering solar fuels to power the planet, and we have channeled their enthusiasm and enlisted their help in our “Solar Army” (see Figure 1). We describe these efforts below. Figure 1. Great care was given to molecule design with in-depth biological characterization of each molecule, in order to maximize the value of this key resource. Paradoxically, the development of modern synthetic methods and high-volume biological testing approaches has caused us to “forget” the importance of these steps. The multi-factorial genetic complexity of human disease, coupled with the complex interactions of drugs in physiological systems is now leading to the recognition that a drug discovery approach driven by numbers alone cannot be successful.
