Peter jolted me into a self-critical reflection on my inappropriate expectations about how the first interview should have gone.
Learning to Become a Social Researcher This piece is included here to illustrate the difficulties and contradictions I, as a person learning to become a social researcher, encountered in the process of interviewing aging men like Peter, who was struggling to come to terms with Parkinson’s disease. ‘There was a clenched, edgy feel to my body as I arrived at Peter’s house for the first, recorded interview in September, 2007. The last year had been an extremely frustrating time for me as an independent researcher desperate to locate a disabled, aging man who was prepared to talk to me openly and honestly about his disability as well as his life history.
Prior to investigating the tangled complexity of these aging men’s lives, a number of conceptual frames that inform my analysis will be outlined. 1 Embodiment Bodies are of central importance in the exploration of aging men’s lives, both their intimate experiences and sensations of their lived in bodies and their social or discursive bodies. However aging men’s bodies have been largely absent (Fleming, 1999; Oberg, 1996) from gerontological 38 Aging Men’s Embodied Selves 39 and sociological literature (Tulle-Winton, 2000).
