They said that they were publishing it because they loved it, not because they thought it would make money. At the time, Farrar, Straus did not publish stories for children and young adults. L’Engle insisted that A Wrinkle in Time was a book for children, so they published it as juvenile fiction.

The reviews were good, but the reader response was phenomenal. So many editors had turned down the manuscript thinking that kids wouldn’t get it. Kids not only “got it”—they loved it. The book begins with the line, “It was a dark and stormy night,” which is the first line of another famous novel, Paul Clifford, by Edward George Bulwer-Lytton. This opening line later became famous in the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz. Snoopy wanted to be a writer, and he always began his novels with this classic first line.
