Cambridge had a method for awarding honors to undergraduates. They took what was called the Tripos examination, one part of which could be devoted to some chosen field of study. The theoretically inclined scientist took the mathematical Tripos, which was notoriously difficult and required the ability to manipulate known formulae to solve well-posed problems very rapidly.

He tried this on beryllium and got results that he could not explain. This experiment was repeated by Irene Curie, Marie's daughter, and her husband, Frederic Joliot. They concluded that the radiation from the beryllium was gamma radiation but of a higher energy than had ever been previously observed. Chadwick decided that they must be wrong.
