WEBSTER Problems of addiction and alcoholism among physicians now merit the most concerted special action by physicians individually and collectively. Physicians are at much higher risk than the general population, particularly for narcotic and sedative addiction. Despite a relatively high incidence, the numbers involved are sufficiently small to warrant a concerted focus and action. Prevention, earlier intervention, and more effective rehabilitation are demonstrably feasible and await more intensive implementation.

The total loss of resources to their communities and the cost to the public is large. In addition to reported cases of physician drug addiction and alcoholism, an estimated 15,000 undetected or unreported cases also exist among physicians in the United States. Based on available studies, and if earlier estimates are unmodified, 1 of 10 physicians will become dependent on psychoactive drugs or alcohol sufficient to impair the practice of medicine at some time during their careers. One of 100 physicians will become narcotic addicts at some time during their careers, and 1 of 10 physician addicts or alcoholics will commit suicide.!
