Nonetheless, in the War of Independence, Israeli sailors managed to sink the Emir Farouk, the best-known ship of the Egyptian fleet. With statehood, the Israeli Navy bought ships and equipment and began training Israeli sailors, so that it has become an important branch of the IDF.
