The 4th Battalion was a Territorial Force unit, and ended up spending much of the war in India. Comparing the war with a hunting trip where accommodation, travel and even ammunition costs would be provided, was designed to appeal to the adventurous, and intended to raise a smile. In total, 137 people (many of them civilians) were killed in the combined raids, with a further 592 injured. Recruitment posters calling on young men to ‘avenge Scarborough’ were printed within twenty-four hours of the atrocity. The attack was presented as another example of German barbarity, on a par with the treatment of women and children in ‘defenceless’ Belgium.
