The 4th Battalion was a Territorial Force unit, and ended up spending much of the war in India. Comparing the war with a hunting trip where accommodation, travel and even ammunition costs would be provided, was designed to appeal to the adventurous, and intended to raise a smile. It highlighted the commonly held belief that the war would be over quickly and easily, culminating in the successful capture of Berlin by spring 1915. The named recruiter is Private Daniel Sherrin, a local Kent artist who volunteered early in the war.

46 47 OUR ANCESTORS FREEDOM FOUGHT FOR OUR Bannerman Published in South Africa, 1914 Although the Union of South Africa was a dominion of the British Empire, war with Germany in 1914 was not universally supported there. Many South Africans, known as Boers, had German or Dutch ancestry. The use of the Union Flag and the phrase ‘Our Ancestors Fought For Our Freedom’ would have been divisive, as a large proportion of the population resented the British victory over their short-lived republics in the Second Boer War (1899–1902).

Famed as a seaside resort with no military significance, the town was defenceless against the long-range guns of the German Imperial Navy. In total, 137 people (many of them civilians) were killed in the combined raids, with a further 592 injured. Recruitment posters calling on young men to ‘avenge Scarborough’ were printed within twenty-four hours of the atrocity. The attack was presented as another example of German barbarity, on a par with the treatment of women and children in ‘defenceless’ Belgium.
