In year three we began to question the use of that kind of testing. Following much discussion, much of which was informed by the experience of philosophy and ethics faculty, we came to a new mode of testing. A new bank of essay questions was developed; these were designed to be open-book exams. Students would be asked essay questions that they would then answer and support with evidence from a list of approved texts. Initial assessments indicate that students found these open-book tests “harder” and that they were more useful indicators of what students had learned.
