In contrast, the second half examines the formation of medical histories in early and medieval China through the exemplary healer list. It shows that the present image of the early medical fathers was produced in response to different events before the twentieth century: the reorganization of the imperial collections in 26 BC, the rise of literati healers beginning in the Song dynasty, the publication of important medical classics in the 1060s, and the emergence of textual controversies regarding a canonical work of medicine.
