To measure the health of freshwater ecosystems, the LPR tracked the population trends of 102 freshwater vertebrate species, including mammals, birds, amphibians, and fish. Since 1970, freshwater species have, on average, declined by about 45% (World Wildlife Fund 1999,6). Already one-fifth of the world's freshwater fish are either endangered or extinct.

Currently, humans are operating on an energy budget many times what can be recovered on a sustainable basis from these sources. By the 1980s, Vitousek and others estimated that humans were using roughly half of the globe's net annual energy capture by these sources (Vitousek et al. 1986), and a similar estimate in 2002 finds humans using about a fifth more than earth's biological restorative capacity (Wackernagel et al. 2002). Many of the problems we have described in this chapter involve the widespread distribution and mixing of materials at the molecular level—nitrogen, acid rain (hydrogen), environmental estrogens, heavy metals, and so on.

But the state of the world's agroecosystems is declining. According to a World Resources report, about two-thirds of agricultural land has been degraded in the past fifty years, placing considerable constraints on future productivity (United Nations Development Programme et al. 2000, 10). Not only land degradation, but many other global environmental trends directly threaten agricultural production. For example, climate change will probably disrupt rainfall patterns, while increased ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation will damage plants by disrupting photosynthesis.
