Unlike Indo Aryan or Iranian languages, which survive as tangible entities, preceding stages of the Indo-Iranian family exist only as reconstructions - from cognates within the daughter languages and from occasional archaisms surviving as loan-words in other (principally Finno-Ugric) languages.
