The war ended before this program could be put into action. Mechanical problems stopped more Renaults than any other cause bar trenches. The fan-belts were a constant headache right up to the end of the war. In one action, an American Renault FT company used up more than one new fan-belt per tank in less than a day. The problems were caused both by the poor quality of the belts and by driver inexperience; the belts could be broken if the engine were suddenly revved up too fast, or could snap after a cold start.
